Maybe it’s my love of merch. Maybe it’s my opinionated attitude. Maybe it’s my soft spot for witty conversation. Whatever it is, one thing is perfectly clear: I love fashion that makes a statement. And, arguably, no piece accomplishes this better than the graphic tee.
But now that it’s getting chillier out, I’ve traded in my graphic t-shirts for slogan sweatshirts. As is the case with tees, when you get to be in your late 20s as I am, it can be difficult to wear a graphic tee or sweatshirt without feeling a little juvenile. I think it’s because in my college days, I threw them on when I was feeling too lazy to look presentable. So today, I’m going to show you how to give these fun sweatshirts a grown-up look while still embracing your playful side.
make a statement
Okay, I know what some of you non-believers are thinking. Slogan fashion has been around forever – why don’t we just retire it already? And to that I say: Never!
There are several reasons that I’m a fan of these cheeky pieces, but here are a few:
- To me, they’re kind of like tattoos – but with way less commitment
- I’ve always been a fan of quotes – as a writer by trade, words have a way with me
- Nostalgic value
- Give the world a tiny bit of insight into who you are – no introduction necessary
Slogan sweatshirts unite Beyonce fans and empower feminists. They connect wine connoisseurs and brunch enthusiasts. And really, I just think fashion is more fun when you put a piece of your personality into it – this is an easy way to do so.
The easiest way to elevate this everyday look is by adding in the perfect accessories. I chose a pair of faux suede heels and a handheld clutch, both in a lovely periwinkle shade that picks up one of the subtle accent colors from my sweatshirt.
Heels have a natural way of taking this outfit from casual to classy casual. Choosing a handheld clutch rather than my go-to oversized satchel continues the thread of chic minimalism, showcasing that this outfit was anything but a last resort.
With the addition of a delicate, pretty station necklace like this one, I’m ready to make the world my comfy chic runway.
less is more
When heightening the appearance of a graphic sweatshirt, it’s worth noting how easy it is to go overboard on trying to make it look sophisticated (thereby, doing exactly the opposite). Note that I chose a classic, dark wash pair of rolled cuff denim, rather than something more trendy. The embroidered or patchwork denim trends, for example, would compete with the sweater sleeves, and weaken the sweater’s message.
Along the same line, light wash denim or distressed denim didn’t feel right for this look, since those styles read very young to me. If my top was solid color or a posh silhouette (like peplum or illusion), sure; But with this style, I want to ensure that I look put together and polished, so a balance of elements is key.
the psychology of fashion
If I’m being totally honest, I think that part of the reason why I love statement t-shirts and sweatshirts is because I love diving into why we choose to wear what we wear, so anything with a message on it is a clear insight. I want to see your personality, your humor, your activism, your passion on your sleeve – sometimes literally.
As we head into 2018, this trend seems to be getting even stronger. Are you a fan? I know that I, for one, can’t wait to see what kind of messages we’ll be claiming this year.
