So often, when I talk about being a fashion blogger, people ask me some variation of this question: “So, how would you describe your style?”
And I usually respond with some form of “think street chic meets sexy meets smart.” But you know what? I hate confining myself to a box. For example, I’m absolutely in love with this outfit, but if I chose all of my outfits based on my “style,” I never would have reached for this lace Vince Camuto dress.
Fit note: I’m wearing a size XL – it’s open on the hips so it works for me, especially since I’m a shortie!
What I’m trying to say is: don’t be afraid to leave yourself options – in life, and especially in fashion.
I used to feel self-conscious about switching up my style too much. When I started tenth grade, it was my first year in real deal public school. I remember in the first week of school, I wore a dainty blue dress one day and a punked out ensemble the next (think: millennium Hot Topic kid). And a girl made a comment about how I was weird, like I didn’t know who I was because I jumped all over the fashion spectrum. At the time, I felt really insecure, because I liked having so many style options, but I didn’t want to make waves at a new school.
Now, I think that versatile approach to fashion is what helps set me apart.
Dear high school girl, whose name I can’t even remember, this kiss is for you. #prettyandpetty ;P
Let’s be real though. This outfit makes me feel freaking fantastic. Those of you who follow me on Instagram already know that, because I’ve posted about five million pics of it. #sorrynotsorry
I’d like to take a moment to express my love for mock necklines. I’m not necessarily complaining, but I’m one of those girls who have to worry about showing too much cleavage in everything. Except turtlenecks and mock necklines. So, I always welcome a great mock neckline addition to my closet!
The moral of the story? If you see something – whether it be a dress, a piece of jewelry, a pair of shoes, or something else – and it speaks to you, give it a try even if it’s not something you’d usually go for! If I didn’t step outside of my fashion box, I would have never picked up this great find. Or countless other pieces that are in my closet on regular rotation.
