I don’t know about y’all, but for me, plus size winter fashion is the hardest season to master. I want to be warm and snuggly without looking frumpy. I want to add layers, but I don’t want my shape to get lost in a sea of fabric. And, worst of all, others seem to make it look so easy. So, here I am, setting the record straight: Looking cute and cozy all winter long does not come naturally to me (even though I grew up in Buffalo, where the windchill is regularly subzero at this time of year).
That said, my yearly struggle is your benefit: This year, I’ve finally put together some tips for putting your most stylish foot (or boot) forward, without freezing!
sweater dresses can be stylish
For years, I thought I had to give up my love of dresses for an entire season, as sweater dresses were one of the only styles warm enough to wear in the winter. Most of the plus size sweater dress options I came across were either shapeless (think: potato sack) or clung to my body in really weird, unflattering ways. Eventually, however, I found that with the right digging and knowing what to look out for, plus size designers and brands are now offering more sweater dresses that accentuate the curves.
Take this Torrid piece, for example. Its weighty composition serves as a double benefit. First, it gives the dress some structure so it’s not sticking to your body. Second of all, it’s thick enough to seal out the wind. I also can’t get enough of its mixed stitch construction: The bodice is diamond knit to add a dash of cute style to your outfit, while the flared skirt is ribbed knit to really enhance your shape. There was a time that I wouldn’t have even tried this dress on because I was convinced that sweater dresses just weren’t for me. But if you look out for options that have structured shapes, high quality fabric and thoughtful stitching, they’re a can’t-miss addition to your winter wardrobe.
Reign tip: For cooler climates, add in a pair of opaque tights or gray leggings to tie this look together and ensure maximum warmth.

keep your outerwear neutral and timeless
Let me be very clear: I love trends, and you all know that. But as much as I want to buy up every camo puffer, sequin bomber, patch moto and metallic faux leather jacket in sight, in my heart of hearts, I know it’s just not practical for my budget or my magically disappearing closet space.
For starters, I’ve learned over the years that outerwear is a definite afterthought for me. I’m notoriously late everywhere I go (terrible habit, I know), so I just grab whatever jacket and dash out the door without a second thought. I don’t have time or energy to be thinking about what matches what and whether sequins clash with stripes. On the other hand, I realized that all of my favorite fashion influencers’ winter looks included gorgeous outerwear of some sort.
My solution? Stick to neutral colors and timeless silhouettes. For example: are you in love with all of the blush options out there right now? I know I am. You can emulate the same, soft look with a cream piece, and you’ll get more mileage because it will complement way more outfits. My go-to colors for outerwear that will never go out of style are cream, beige/tan, gray and, of course, black. Here’s a current favorite of mine from Modcloth.
My favorite silhouettes include the traditional pea coat and peplum trench coats, for their classic, feminine touches. If you’re in a colder climate and need what I call a “real deal” coat, I love parkas and anoraks.
let your footwear be the style star
Y’all. They are doing crazy things with boots these days. From embroidered to studded to chain-adorned in all sorts of heights, I am floored by all of the ways that boots are stepping up the fashion game. That said, one of my favorite tricks for flawless winter style is to keep the outfit itself relatively classic and understated, but let my boots make a real statement.
With their bold blue color and sexy silver-tone buckle features, these Ara ankle booties from Xehar Curvy fit the bill. I love the way that the blue pops, especially on overcast days. Even though they’re way down on the feet, shoes are the easiest way to capture a second glance and earn a compliment. Your freshest outfits are never truly complete without a cool pair of kicks. don’t forget about skincare
As the temperatures begin to drop, it’s so easy to get caught up in everything that winter brings: the holidays, traveling, busy seasons at work, etc. I know that for me, most cold days I’m just focused on getting my outfit together, putting on some makeup and getting out the door. But this No7 Youthful Vitamin C Fresh Radiance Essence has been a game changer for my skincare routine. During the cooler months, I have to take extra good care of my skin so that it stays glowing and healthy, and this 2-week treatment is the perfect pick-me-up. It refreshes with 5% pure Vitamin C to jumpstart your skin’s natural renewal process.
I’m only 4 days into my treatment, and I’ve already noticed some great benefits. The biggest change so far has been that my skin feels silky soft and clean (rather than dull and lifeless), and my skin tone is much more even. I tend to gather red pigmentation on my cheeks, but with this product, the redness has been diminished. Definitely happy that I’ve added this product into my beauty lineup, and I could definitely see it being beneficial to use every season to help reset my skin!
And there you have it – from outfit selection to shoes to beauty routine, these are my go-to style tips for winter. This season, I’ve felt so much more prepared and refreshed than in seasons past, and I hope that these thoughts will help you to love plus size winter fashion as well. Do you have a favorite cold weather style or beauty tip? I’d love to hear about it! Until next time, stay warm out there and let’s make the most of this season.
Please note: I received my Youthful Vitamin C Fresh Radiance Essence complimentary from No7, and my Ara ankle booties complimentary from Xehar Curvy. The opinions are 100% my own.
