True Blue

Happy Wednesday, honey bees! I hope that everyone had a beautiful Valentine’s Day. I kept things pretty low-key, myself, with plenty of relaxing. Now that I’m nice and rested, I’m ready to jump right into a controversial topic: wearing straight sizes as a definitively plus size woman.

Let me repeat: I am not an in-betweenie. By my personal definition, an in-betweenie is a woman who’s a size 12/14 (not all, but some), who can float between the straight size and plus size sections  and typically find something that fits comfortably. By contrast, my measurements tend to put me at a size 18/20. Still, on occasion, I will shop the straight size section. Here’s why.

From designer to designer, and even silhouette to silhouette within the same designer, sizes vary so drastically. I tend to focus more on fit and appearance. If I see something that looks like it will fit me, I’ll try it on even if it says it’s a size 14. By the same ticket, if something says it’s an 18 but it’s uncomfortably tight on me, I will size up until I find the right fit.

Take this Vince Camuto dress, for example. I saw this piece displayed right near the front entrance at my local Palais Royal. I was drawn in by the rich blue hue, the subtle texturing, and the gorgeous mock neck. I felt that the fit and flare silhouette might offer me enough give in the hip area to make it work, even though it only went up to a straight size XL.

To my delight, it was a great fit! Does it have the “dreaded” VBO (visible belly outline)? It sure does, but honestly, who cares? I get compliments on this dress everywhere I wear it. It’s super versatile and oh-so-comfortable. Shows off a bit of leg, but I have no problem with that. Not a huge fan of showing off your stems, or is the weather actually wintery where you are?  Try styling it with black tights and wedges, or with grey cable knit leggings and ankle booties.

PS – how cool is this sparkly hand harness bracelet from Sam Moon? I’m head over heels. The perfect statement piece to add a touch of shine to a dress without upstaging.
