Twinning Tuesday: Denim Shirts

We’re back at it! About a month ago, I teamed up with the beautiful Amber Marie of  FatshionbythePounds to bring you a feature called Twinning Tuesday. Coincidentally, that was also my last blog post — sorry about that, love bugs! In August, I got my wisdom teeth pulled, started my first full month writing for Bustle.com (in addition to having a full-time job), and went to Louisiana to volunteer with the American Red Cross as part of the disaster relief team (keep an eye out for a post talking about my experience). To say it was a busy month would be an understatement!

Today, Amber and I are showing you two ways to style your denim shirt. This is a piece that I feel almost everyone has in their closet. Sure, it might be a different wash (light, medium, dark, indigo, grey), long or short sleeved, baggy or fitted, but nevertheless, it’s one of those must-have wardrobe staples. Oddly enough, however, I also find that it’s one of those pieces that tends to be a stumper in terms of how to wear it.

To help you transition through the seasons, Amber and I decided to tackle this piece for fall and winter. For my fall look, I went for a classic, but daring, denim-on-denim ensemble. There’s something about denim that screams fall to me. I composed my entire look of what I consider to be staple closet items, because for me, one of the beauties of fall fashion is that we retire a lot of the trendy pieces and colors of summer and get back to basics.

Your denim shirt, a denim skater skirt (I prefer mine in a different wash to avoid looking too matchy-matchy), a timeless striped bag, and coordinating gladiators are all you need to coordinate an outfit that’s perfect for anything from foliage drives to fall festivals to bookstore browsing, three of my favorite autumn activities.

Since I live in Houston, we don’t necessarily get a cold fall. If you live in a chillier climate, my look is easily adapted for cooler temps. Swap the skirt out for high waist jeans, or add leggings underneath. Switch out the gladiators for booties. Bundle up with your favorite scarf or blanket wrap. The great thing about a denim shirt is that it really is a blank canvas!

Over on the right, you’ll see that Amber is rocking a winter-ready look. By pairing her denim shirt with black jeans, the great light wash color really pops! I love the way she adds in a red flannel jacket for pattern and dimension, and then of course, a grey beanie…because is it really  even winter without your favorite hat on?!

When we were planning this post, Amber mentioned that she’d be working distressed jeans, and that a fashion-forward way to remix this outfit would be to add in fun leggings. I love that idea, because to me, half of the allure of winter fashion is to explore new and unique ways of layering. I’m imagining cheetah print leggings for a peek of bold style to play off of the fierceness of the red jacket.

One of my favorite things about Amber’s approach is its versatility. This is really an outfit that can fit in just about anywhere you’re going this winter. Equally eye-catching for romantic nighttime strolls or watching snow fall from your front porch with a cup of cocoa. Heck, I’d even wear this to wintertime family photos for an edgy spin!

And that’s that! Hopefully, this post gives you a little outfit inspo for busting out that denim shirt and putting your own twist on it! Whether you go fall or winter, skirt or pants, girly or edgy, this piece boasts endless possibilities and is so much fun to play around with.

Scroll down to the bottom of this post for my outfit details, and give Amber a visit at Fatshion by the Pounds to learn more about her ensemble. As always, keep slaying and thank you for stopping by, divas!
